Where AI already helps in construction

When people think of AI in construction, they picture smart design software, drones or robots on site. For a typical construction or installation firm, the first gain is closer to home: in the hours, material bookings, projects and invoices already stored in the project administration and the accounting system.

That data is recorded every day but rarely used in time. Job costing comes after completion, project managers ask the office for figures, and management only sees the margin per project at month-end close. An AI agent that calculates on that data changes this without a new system on site.

1. Track project margin while the work runs

The basis is simple: invoiced revenue minus hours at cost price, materials and subcontracting. 2. Spot overruns before it is too late

Worked example: seeing an overrun in time

Fictional example. Contract sum EUR 120,000; the project manager estimates the project is 60% complete.

Materials are on plan, but hours are not: at 60% complete, 71% of the hours are already used. Extrapolated, the project ends at 1,067 hours and the margin drops from 27% to 22%. Because you see this halfway, you can still adjust or discuss extra work with the client.

What you need

AI only calculates as well as the data that goes in. Check three things before you start:

• Are hours always logged on a project, not on a general code?
• Are materials and purchase invoices linked to a project?
• Is it agreed which hourly rate you use for job costing?

Also record definitions, such as what you mean by margin and complete. Then the agent gives everyone the same answer.
